The noise isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you walk through any large data center campus these days. The heat is the cause. Fans spinning more quickly than necessary, rows of server cabinets humming, and an engineer in a control room watching a power bill rise in real time. More than any keynote slide, that picture explains why hardware is finally ceasing to play a supporting role in 2026.

The history of computing was straightforward for many years. Reduce the transistor’s size, double its number, wait two years, then repeat. The industry based its business plans on Moore’s Law, which was more of a habit than a law. Now, that habit is disappearing, and not in a nice way. Even for the biggest foundries, the economics of new fabrication nodes have become difficult, and physics continues to push back at the atomic level.

In the meantime, AI workloads continue to come in, each one more hungry than the last. Previously ostentatious training runs now appear modest. Walking through any tech conference this year gives the impression that the focus has shifted from how fast a chip can operate to how little energy it can use. The new flex is efficiency rather than raw speed.

Custom silicon can help with that. Graviton4 is available on AWS. Cobalt is owned by Microsoft. Axion was created by Google. They all rely on Arm-based designs, and they are all in existence because the hyperscalers determined that generic chips were too expensive and power-intensive. Perhaps this will be remembered as the time when cloud companies ceased to be consumers of the chip industry and began to participate in it.

However, the more intriguing tale might be taking place far from Mountain View or Seattle. A group at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru recently reported molecular devices based on ruthenium complexes that, depending on how they are stimulated, can function as memory, logic, or something akin to a synapse. According to reports, Pallavi Gaur, a PhD candidate who oversaw the fabrication work, acknowledged that she was taken aback by the amount of versatility concealed within the same system. The part that stuck with me was the press release’s uncommon level of honesty.

Next year, silicon won’t be replaced by what they’ve created. The following year, it most likely won’t be replaced either. However, it’s the framing that counts. For the first time in a long time, chemistry is being considered more than just a material supplier—rather, it is being viewed as an architect of computation. There is a sense that the field is becoming more accepting of concepts that ten years ago would have been written off as exotic.

Particularly in EVs and industrial systems, silicon carbide and gallium nitride are quietly working on power conversion. Networking equipment continues to incorporate silicon photonics. Once a specialized packaging technique, chiplets are now the standard for designing anything ambitious. None of these had a keynote speech that went viral. They simply continued to appear on roadmaps until no one could ignore them.

It’s difficult to ignore how much of this innovation is imposed rather than voluntary. The high cost of energy, supply chain-related geopolitical concerns, and the overwhelming demand for AI are not encouraging circumstances. They are limitations. Furthermore, the best engineering has historically been produced by constraints. It remains to be seen if that results in the next great computing era or merely a clumsy bridge to one. The labs are speculating that it’s the former.
