Nvidia’s Acquisition of SchedMD Has Researchers Terrified About Software Monopolies

There is a certain type of uneasiness that permeates technical communities through private conversations rather than headlines or press releases; it’s a silent alarm that engineers share over Signal threads and in conference hallways.

That’s essentially what transpired when Nvidia revealed in December 2025 that it had purchased SchedMD, the small business in charge of maintaining Slurm, the workload scheduling program that covertly powers roughly 60% of the world’s supercomputers. The agreement was presented as a victory for the open-source community. Some of the people who use Slurm on a daily basis didn’t think that way.

Slurm is not an eye-catching piece of software. It doesn’t have a CEO who appears on podcasts or a logo that appears at tech conferences. It was first constructed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a type of government research facility where functionality is far more important than branding. Its primary function is to act as an extremely capable traffic cop, determining which computing jobs run on which machines and when. Meta makes use of it. It is used by Anthropic for some aspects of training AI models.

It is essential to Mistral, the French AI startup that has garnered a lot of attention lately. The government supercomputers used for national security research and weather forecasting also do this. In other words, whoever is in charge of Slurm’s development has a significant influence over the most significant computing infrastructure in the world.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that Nvidia knew exactly what it was purchasing. With its GPUs, the company already dominates AI hardware, and with InfiniBand, it has substantial control over networking infrastructure. Analysts refer to the result of adding Slurm’s development roadmap to that portfolio as a “tightly vertically integrated stack”—a term that sounds formal until you consider its practical implications.

These days, Nvidia manufactures the chips, manages the interconnects, and has the software that determines how workloads are divided among all of it, including AMD and Intel chips. Despite what the press release claims, that is not a neutral stance.

It’s not necessarily a worry that Nvidia will suddenly turn off competitors’ hardware. It’s more subtle and, in some respects, more concerning than that. Manish Rawat, a semiconductor analyst at TechInsights, characterized it as “soft power rather than hard lock-in”—a scenario in which Nvidia could gradually mold Slurm’s roadmap, giving priority to features that work best with CUDA and its own GPU ecosystem, while support for AMD’s ROCm or Intel’s oneAPI moves a little more slowly, gets a little less attention, and is planned for the next release cycle rather than this one.

Industry observers note that, in comparison to alternatives, integration timelines already demonstrate faster support for the CUDA ecosystem. It’s unclear at this point whether that’s due to organizational gravity or intentionality.

These discussions often bring up the company’s 2022 acquisition of Bright Computing, though analysts are cautious to point out that the analogy isn’t exact. Instead of continuing to function as a neutral multi-vendor orchestration tool, Bright Computing became deeply integrated into Nvidia’s DGX and AI Factory stacks. Bright supports almost any CPU or GPU-accelerated cluster, according to Nvidia, which disputes that description.

However, researchers who operate in heterogeneous environments believe that Bright has gradually moved closer to Nvidia’s hardware. Slurm is a distinct animal. It has something approaching true community governance built around it, is more established in government and academic computing, is older, and has higher switching costs. Here, Nvidia might have less leeway. However, the worry is genuine.

In a straightforward statement, Dr. Danish Faruqui, CEO of Fab Economics, a US-based AI hardware and datacenter advisory, stated that there is a real possibility that Nvidia will deprioritize rival hardware in upcoming updates. As the main developer, Nvidia now has the power to decide which features are examined, approved, and released; over time, this power influences the software’s development.

A potential escape route is provided by the open-source license under GNU GPL v2.0, which allows the community to fork the project if Nvidia’s stewardship appears to be biased. However, the majority of the world’s senior Slurm developers joined Nvidia as a result of the acquisition. The rest of the community would probably find it difficult to keep up with a fork.

For enterprise buyers, this likely means heightened awareness, at least temporarily. According to Faruqui, companies negotiating Slurm support contracts should look for specific service-level guarantees that cover response times and feature parity across non-Nvidia hardware.

These should be contractual commitments rather than just assurances. Rawat’s proposal is more structural: invest in internal expertise that would make switching to alternative schedulers like Flux or Kubernetes truly feasible if necessary, diversify GPU procurement, and benchmark workloads across multiple vendor ecosystems.

It’s the kind of advice that, up until it doesn’t, sounds extremely cautious. Observing all of this, it seems like the industry is going through one of those slow-moving periods where a structural shift is taking place, and most people won’t fully realize it for another two or three years, when the effects become more difficult to undo.
